Mayan Soto Stickel

Fueled by Heart and Hustle

Mayan is a Nashville-based bassist whose sound fuses the melodic sensibility of 1980s new wave with the raw aggression of punk and hardcore. She is currently studying Commercial Music at Belmont University, focusing on music technology and music business. Whether she’s laying down tight grooves in the studio or locking in on stage, Mayan brings clarity, punch, and a strong sense of purpose to every performance. She’s building a career that balances technical skill with artistic expression.

Her musical roots began with classical piano, which she studied for over a decade before switching to bass during the COVID lockdowns. Drawn to the angular, synth-heavy sounds of bands like Duran Duran, Kajagoogoo, Japan, and the experimental punk energy of The Garden, she quickly fell in love with the physicality and grit of the instrument. Although she never played in a traditional school band—outside of accompanying Catholic school masses on guitar—Mayan eventually took a leap of faith and applied to music school instead of following her earlier, “safe-option” plans.

Once she landed in Nashville, Mayan hit the ground running. She formed her first band, Skayda, an all-female, high-energy alt trio where she wrote music and played bass alongside two equally energetic women. From there, the relentless gigging began, and she hasn’t slowed down since. Her career has grown to include a wide range of genres, from jazz and funk to punk, indie, and pop. She’s taken her playing on the road, performing in cities like New York, Los Angeles, Tampa, St. Louis, Columbus, Madison, and throughout her home city of Indianapolis. Regardless of the genre or setting, she’s known for her power, adaptability, and commanding presence—especially when performing with all-female or female-led acts, which remains a deeply meaningful part of her identity as a musician.

At the heart of Mayan’s vision is the pursuit of a scene where music isn’t just entertainment but something people feel in their bones. She’s drawn to spaces where crowds are fully engaged, and come alive in the pit rather than passively sipping on the sidelines. While Nashville has given her invaluable growth and opportunity, she often wrestles with the city’s commercial pressures and expectations which feel forced and inauthentic. For Mayan, music has never been about fitting a mold, chasing mainstream success, or being the most technical player in the room. It’s about creating raw, cathartic moments that connect on a deeper level. Music is her outlet, and she plays for the people who feel it just as intensely as she does.
